Garage Door Repairs How to Fix a Garage Door? - Need Help with a Garage Door Repair?

Narrow your search by Manufacturer:

There are no items to display.

We can supply the garage door spares and fitting instructions to help most garage door repairs.

The most common questions I get asked:

(Q) How to Fix a Garage Door?

Firstly try to identify the make of your garage door, then search for the parts under the Manufacturers List on the right of the website.

(Q) How to Repair a Garage Door?
If you have found the parts need for the repair, then you must read any garage door fitting instructions for that part!

(Q)How do I repair my garage door cable or spring?
Please do not attempt to repair any garage door cable or spring,
it is highly advisable not to weld any spring or try to join a cable with block connectors etc.

(Q) How much would it cost to get a professional to repair my garage door?
This depends on the repair, the average price in the UK for replacing the cones and cables is £79.00 and £120.00 including the roller spindles been replaced.

By not doing the job properly in the first place may cost you a lot more in the long run!

If the job is worth doing then its worth doing properly - First Time!

Do you Really Need a New Garage Door?

There are plenty of companies that can offer a Garage Door Repair Service this can sometimes work out expensive for replacing the garage door cables or fitting a garage door lock.

Time and time again customers call me to say that they have just had a Company out to
repair the garage door expecting them to replace the cables and roller spindles or to fit new garage door springs which would get the door working like new,
but to be told that "You need a new garage door"?

The customer goes onto the stress that even though there is nothing wrong with the garage door, ie, no rust, no dents, and that they could see the door lasting another 25 years,
the Garage Door Repair Company recommends that a new door is fitted.

I have heard selling and scare tactics such as:

If the door is not repalced the cables might break later on and the door may fall on your car?

The garage door parts needed are now obsolete?

The door is past its sell by date?

Please do not fall for the non of the above unless you have had 3 quotes and all are saying the same!
If in doubt please take some photos of the parts that are broken and send them to me.
I can then give advice on how best to repair the door and also a price for the parts.
If the parts are no longer available I may be able to source an alternative part!

It Makes Sense to Fix Your Garage Door!

In these tough economic times, maintenance and refurbishment makes far more sense than replacement.
Most improvements or refurbishments on houses and gardens end up costing far more than was originally expected. By trying to do as much of the work yourself within your capabilities
is going to help at times like these.
Garage doors for example are items that if working properly are marvellous and can add to a properties aesthetics and value.
We all take for granted the opening and closing of the garage door on a day to day basis, usually with very little though as to any routine maintenance!
So imagine the horror when the cables, rollers spindles, springs or even the garage door handle breaks and you are left unable to gain access to your car, motorcycle, freezer or garden equipment!
An old garage door can look shabby and make the whole property look less desirable especially
when it comes to selling a property.
A well looked after garage door in good decorative order is all part of the external appeal of a house. Routine maintenance of oiling all moving parts can prolong the life of any garage door,
especially if near to the coast. (salt erosion)
The cables and cones or even the garage springs are the main components on garage doors that do tend to need replacing first usually due to wear and tear or damage, if fitted correctly and with routine maintenance there is no reason the running parts should not last average 20 years or more!!
The cables and springs can often be easily and cost effectively replaced.

Never try to repair a broken cable or garage door spring!

Customer mis-sold the wrong garage door springs!

I had a telephone call from a customer recently who explained that a garage door spring had broken and that they no longer get the car out of the garage.
They called a local company out to replace the spring, they were quoted £250.00 including a £75.00 call out charge for fitting two new springs
The customer agreed to have the work done as they were desperate to have access to the garage.
The customer noticed that the replacement springs were not identical as the old springs, they were told that the springs that had been fitted were a universal spring because their particular
spring was now obsolete. However that same evening the customer tried to open the door to put his car away but the door would not open very easily. It was if the springs were just
not strong enough to lift the door!
The customer called the repair company to come out and check the springs but were told that it was either those springs or a new garage door..

I requested for the customer to supply me with all the following information:

The size of the garage door, Width x Height

Length of the spring over the coils

How many coils make up the spring

Diameter of the spring and wire (if possible)

Any colour to the spring, ie: Grey, Yellow, Blue

What the door is made of, ie: metal, wood or GRP

Pattern / Style of the door, ie: Horizontal, Vertical, Victorian etc

From the above information I was able to establish that the customer had a Cardale Garage Door, and the spring they needed was the Cardale Blue Spot Spring,
I also explained how easy it was to fit the springs, so to save paying another company.
The customer called me back two days later to say "Thank you, the door is now working as good as new!"
The two new springs cost less than sixty pounds, so before you call a company out to repair your door it is worth investigating the cost of doing the repair yourself!

Q: How do I find out the make / model of my Garage Door?

A: 1. Firstly look on the garage door handle, this usually gives you the manufacturers name, ie, Henderson, Cardale, Garador etc.

2. If there is no name on the lock, then look inside the garage, usually on the inside of the garage door there is a manufacturers lable, ie, Wessex, Marley, Westland etc

3. If you still cannot find any name or manufacturers labels on the garage door, you can take a photo of the garage door lock / handle inside
and out and then e-mail the photo to me and I will try to identify the garage door for you!

Q: How do I change / replace my Garage Door Cables?

Safety
Safety is always important when carrying out maintenance work yourself. Before attempting to carry out any
maintenance or repairs to a garage door it is important to read carefully any Instructions provided for that particular make of door and also
to make sure you have all the correct parts and tools necessary to enable you to complete the repairs!
Remember the springs on garage doors are usually held under a good deal of tension.
Finally, before any work is attempted on the garage door, the tension on the spring or springs must be isolated or released, only after this has been done can any work be completed in safety.
